Why Carpet Is Still the Default Basement Floor in Calgary
Calgary basements are cold underfoot for most of the year, and concrete slabs pull heat out of any hard flooring laid directly over them. Carpet with the right pad adds real insulation value and makes a basement usable in January without space heaters in every corner. That's why, even as vinyl plank has taken over main floors, most finished basements we see in Calgary still get carpet in the bedrooms, rec room and media areas.
Basement Development Is a Calgary Habit
A huge share of Calgary homes – from 1970s bungalows in Acadia to new builds in Seton and Livingston – either have a developed basement or are about to get one. Secondary suites have also become far more common since the city streamlined suite approvals, which means basement carpet is often going into a space someone will live in full time, not just a hobby room. We treat those installs accordingly: proper pad, proper seams, door clearances checked.
Concrete Subfloors and What They Change
Below-grade concrete behaves differently than a wood subfloor. It can wick moisture, it's rarely perfectly level, and tackless strip has to be fastened with concrete nails or adhesive rather than staples. We check for visible moisture history, test questionable slabs, and flag low spots that need patching before any carpet goes down. Skipping those steps is how basement carpet ends up smelling musty a year later.
Choosing Pad for a Below-Grade Room
Pad matters more in a basement than anywhere else in the house. We typically recommend a moisture-resistant rebond or synthetic pad rather than the cheapest option, and in basements with any moisture history, a pad with a vapour-resistant film. Thicker isn't automatically better – very soft pad in a basement rec room full of furniture just means deeper dents.
Carpet Over Subfloor Systems
Plenty of Calgary basements are finished with a raised subfloor panel system over the slab. Carpet installs fine over these – the panels give a warmer, drier base – but edge fastening and transitions to stairs or tile need to be planned differently than on bare concrete. Basement Bedrooms and Legal Suites
Basement bedrooms take more foot traffic than rec rooms, and suite installs need durable carpet a tenant can't destroy in one lease. For those rooms we usually point people toward a mid-grade nylon rather than a budget polyester – the price difference on one basement bedroom is small, and the wear difference is large.
How Long a Basement Install Takes
A typical developed basement – a rec room, one or two bedrooms and a hallway – is usually carpeted in a day, including old carpet removal. Stairs into the basement add time, and slab prep (patching, levelling) can add a day of lead time before install if it's needed.
After a Water Event
Calgary basements do occasionally take water, whether from spring melt, a burst pipe or an overland flood. Once carpet and pad have been soaked, the pad is almost never worth saving. We're straightforward about this: if the carpet dried fast and the pad was spared, a re-stretch and clean may do it; if the pad soaked, replacement is the honest answer.
